Record Achievement: Indonesia's Coal Production Reaches 766.95 Million Tons

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) recorded a remarkable surge in Indonesia's coal production throughout 2023, surpassing the set targets. According to Minerba One Map Indonesia (MODI) data released on Monday, January 8, 2024, Indonesia's coal production in 2023 reached 766.95 million tons, representing at least 110.43% of the targeted 694 million tons. From this coal production, the realization for the domestic market or Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) reached 336.55 million tons, while the realization for export markets stood at 396.54 million tons. Comparing year-on-year production data, the 2023 coal production achievement reached a historical peak, surpassing the 2022 record of 671.75 million tons, equivalent to 101.32% of the planned 663 million tons. Based on BP Statistical Review 2022, Indonesia's coal production in 1981 was minimal at around 0.4 million tons per year, gradually increasing to 10.7 million tons in 1990, and then exceeding 100 million tons in 2002. Since 2013, Indonesia's coal production consistently exceeded 400 million tons annually.

In 2018, it reached 557.8 million tons, hitting a record high of 616.2 million tons in 2019. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, Indonesia's coal production declined to 563.7 million tons and rose again in 2021 to 614 million tons. These production figures are subject to updates and could potentially increase further. Earlier, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Dadan Kusdiana, highlighted the positive growth of the mineral and coal sub-sector (minerba), particularly coal, throughout the 11 months of 2023. "Yesterday's coal production was 686 million tons, 98% of our national production target in 2023, which was 694.5 million tons," explained Dadan Kusdiana to CNBC Indonesia during the Road to CNBC Indonesia Awards on Thursday, November 30, 2023. According to Dadan, with this production achievement, the coal requirement for domestic supply (DMO) of 171 million tons will be met. The soaring coal production has also contributed to the state's non-tax revenue (PNBP) in the mineral and coal sector, reaching IDR 152.16 trillion, 178% higher than the set APBN target.
