The year 2023 proved exceptionally positive for Italian tourism, concluding with a remarkable 445.3 million visitors in accommodation facilities, reflecting an impressive 8.1% surge compared to the previous year. This achievement surpasses the pre-pandemic levels of 2019, which recorded 436.7 million visitors. The Florence Tourist Studies Center for Assoturismo Confesercenti reported these findings, emphasizing that 2023 marked the first instance of surpassing pre-pandemic figures.The driving force behind this success was predominantly international visitors, contributing to a notable 13.7% increase from 2022. The absolute values reached over 228.5 million foreign visitors, surpassing the 220.6 million recorded in 2019. The Italian domestic market, while still positive, exhibited a more moderate increase of 2.8% from the previous year, accounting for a total of 216.8 million overnight stays, compared to 216 million in 2019.
Geographically, the North West emerged as the favored destination, experiencing an impressive growth rate of 11.7%. It was followed by the Central region with a 10.4% increase and the North East at 7%. The South and Islands region recorded the lowest growth at 4.4%. Notable sectors contributing to this upswing include cities/art centers (11.4%), mountains (11.1%), rural/hilly areas (10.3%), and spa facilities (10.2%). Positive estimates also extended to lakeside locations (9.6%) and "other interests" (9%). Estimates project a 9.3% increase in hotel facility guests, reaching 276.2 million tourist presences. Non-hotel accommodations also saw a commendable rise of 6.1%, totaling 169.1 million overnight stays. Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè expressed satisfaction with the positive estimates for the end of 2023, indicating a recovery surpassing pre-pandemic levels. She emphasized the need for increased investment in the sector, recognizing its pivotal role as a strong economic driver. Minister Santanchè acknowledged upcoming challenges, including seasonal adjustments, digitalization, and overall industry training and quality, expressing confidence in overcoming these challenges collectively.
