Boosting the National Cocoa Processing Industry: Ministry of Industry's Initiative

Indonesia, being a major cocoa producer with an annual production of 700,000 tons, holds significant potential for the development of the cocoa processing industry. The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is determined to enhance the global competitiveness of the cocoa processing industry, currently boasting 11 processing companies, making Indonesia the fourth-largest cocoa exporter globally with a total export value reaching USD 1.12 billion in 2022. Edy Sutopo, Director of Beverage, Tobacco, and Refreshment Materials Industry at Kemenperin, highlighted the sector's role in supporting downstream activities to increase the domestic value of cocoa. Indonesia excels in intermediate products, such as cocoa pasta/liquor, cocoa cake, cocoa butter, and cocoa powder, capturing 9.17% of the global market share. The chocolate industry, producing mass-market products, comprises over 900 companies with a total production capacity exceeding 462,000 tons annually, generating USD 76.89 million in exports in 2022. Additionally, the artisanal chocolate industry, with 31 companies and a production capacity of 1,242 tons in 2022, utilizing premium raw materials, presents promising opportunities for development.

Kemenperin is proactively implementing programs and policies to boost the performance of the cocoa-based processing industry, ensuring the availability of raw materials and promoting sustainable practices. The ministry is committed to enhancing cocoa productivity to meet the industry's demands, preparing competent human resources, encouraging technological utilization, and optimizing branding programs. Emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation, Kemenperin is dedicated to fostering new entrepreneurs in the cocoa processing sector. Indonesia's diverse range of over 600 chocolate flavors sourced from various regions serves as a potential avenue for continuous product diversification and innovation. Arief Susanto, Chairman of the Indonesian Cocoa Association (Askindo), acknowledged the challenges in developing the cocoa processing industry, including securing a stable supply of raw materials and enhancing cocoa productivity. With over one million cocoa farmers in Indonesia, improving productivity would positively impact their income. In conclusion, Kemenperin's strategic initiatives, coupled with the rich cocoa resources in Indonesia, present an optimistic outlook for the cocoa processing industry. The focus on sustainability, collaboration, and innovation aligns with global trends, positioning Indonesia as a key player in the global cocoa market.
