Potential Medicinal Plants as Key Export Commodities

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Trade in Indonesia, represented by Director General Budi Santoso, envisions Indonesia's potential export commodities such as medicinal plants, essential oils, processed foods, handicrafts, jewelry, and spices dominating the market as primary products in the coming years. Data from the Ministry of Trade revealed that Indonesia's potential export commodities from January to October 2023 amounted to USD 16.99 billion, contributing 8.44% to the country's non-oil and gas exports. Notably, processed foods recorded the highest export value at USD 7.64 billion, followed by jewelry at USD 5.87 billion, fish and fisheries products at USD 1.83 billion, handicrafts at USD 637.15 million, and spices at USD 478.16 million during this period

Moreover, in the same period, two potential commodities experienced significant growth: medicinal plants soared by 151.08%, while jewelry grew by 14.66%. Contrastingly, Indonesia's primary export commodities from January to October 2023, including electronics, textiles, rubber products, palm oil, footwear, automotive goods, shrimp, cocoa, and coffee, totaled USD 69.96 billion, contributing 34.76% to the non-oil and gas exports. Among these, palm oil ranked highest at USD 19.19 billion, followed by textiles and textile products at USD 9.77 billion, automotive goods at USD 9.25 billion, and forest products at USD 8.40 billion. All primary commodities experienced a decrease in contrast to the previous year, except for automotive goods, which witnessed a 3.92% growth. Budi emphasized the need for exporters to enhance the quality, standardization, product competence, and promotion through various exhibitions to elevate potential export commodities into primary products. He stressed the significance of not merely exporting raw materials but establishing Indonesia's products' dominance in international markets.
