41.72 Billion USD Investment Allocated to Three National Oil and Gas Strategic Projects in Indonesia

In 2023, Indonesia is set to embark on three strategic national oil and gas projects, as announced by the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Special Task Force (SKK Migas) Representative for Kalimantan Sulawesi (Kalsul) during a press briefing on Friday, December 22, 2023, in Balikpapan. These significant projects, located in central and eastern Indonesia, will attract a total investment of USD 41.72 billion. The combined production capacity of the projects is anticipated to reach 65,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) for oil and condensate, along with 3,926 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) for natural gas. The first of these strategic national oil and gas projects in 2023 is the BP Tangguh: Train 3 and BP Tangguh: UCC initiatives. Executed by British Petroleum in Papua Barat, the combined investment value for these projects is approximately USD 14.9 billion. Train 3, inaugurated on November 24, 2023, is already operational, while the UCC project is scheduled for a Final Investment Decision (FID) in 2024.

The second project, Abadi Masela in Maluku, is a collaborative effort between Inpex, Pertamina, and Petronas, with a substantial investment of USD 19.8 billion. Set to be onstream by 2029, Abadi Masela marks a crucial milestone in Indonesia's oil and gas sector. The third national oil and gas strategic project, still in progress, is the Indonesia Deepwater Development & Geng North, located in the Makassar Strait within the Kalimantan Timur region. Spearheaded by Eni Indonesia and Chevron, this natural gas exploration project, with a potential capacity of 5.3 trillion cubic feet, is expected to be operational by 2028. The significant investment allocation underscores Indonesia's commitment to advancing its oil and gas sector, fostering economic growth, and fortifying its position as a key player in the global energy landscape.
