Dop Excellence: Veneto Leads in Italy, FVG Shows Growth

Italy's "Dop economy," emblematic of the country's agri-food excellence under the Made in Italy label, reached an unprecedented milestone in 2022, surpassing USD 20 billion in revenues. In this thriving landscape, the North East, notably Veneto, emerges as a prominent player. Veneto maintains its position as the national leader in the Dop economy, yielding over EUR 4.84 billion in sales revenue domestically and internationally. This figure represents 42% of the region's agri-food sector through products boasting the Dop (Protected Designation of Origin) and Igp (Protected Geographical Indication) labels. Friuli Venezia Giulia also excelled, ranking sixth in Italy with a Dop economy value exceeding EUR 1.2 billion, marking a remarkable 10.8% growth from the preceding year. These insights stem from the Ismea-Qualivita 2023 report, offering a comprehensive overview of the sector's performance. Veneto's Dop economy experienced a 5.8% growth from the prior year, contributing significantly to the region's overall agri-food sector. Over 26,000 operators, guided by 44 consortia recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry, are instrumental in this success.

Within Veneto, Treviso leads in economic impact (EUR 2.185 million), trailed by Verona (EUR 1.468 million). Notably, the wine sector significantly drives the region's economic contribution, followed by cheeses, meat-based products, and horticultural items. Key viticultural denominations include Prosecco, Conegliano Valdobbiadene-Prosecco, Amarone della Valpolicella, Pinot grigio Delle Venezie, and Valpolicella Ripasso. Among food designations, Grana Padano, Asiago, Montasio, Piave, Provolone Valpadana, and Prosciutto veneto Berico-Euganeo contribute substantially. Friuli Venezia Giulia boasts the San Daniele raw ham, generating EUR 365 million in revenue, ranking sixth among Italy's most profitable Dop products. The region features 26 Dop and Igp products, collectively contributing over EUR 1.2 billion in production value for 2022. Udine leads wine production (EUR 730 million), followed by Pordenone (EUR 305 million), Gorizia (EUR 167 million), and Trieste (EUR 6.2 million).
