Green investment, characterized by environmentally conscious capital infusion into industries, is deemed a pivotal element in the future development of the tourism sector. Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy/Head of the Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, concurs with this perspective. He perceives the future development of the tourism and creative economy sectors, particularly in the realm of investment, as necessitating a focus on environmental sustainability through the concept of green investment. Outlined in the Indonesia Tourism Outlook 2024 initiated by the Tourism and Creative Economy Journalist Forum (Forwaparekraf), Minister Uno elucidates predictions from various international bodies regarding global challenges that could impact sectoral growth. These challenges encompass geopolitical conditions, economic turbulence, and environmental crises. Despite a declining interest among investors in macroeconomic volatility amid these challenges, climate change emerges as a growing concern, witnessing a 10% increase in apprehension compared to 2022. Minister Uno asserts that with the heightened attention to climate change issues, a reinforced commitment to the development of quality and sustainable tourism is imperative.
Expressing his views, Uno emphasizes Indonesia's high potential for the development of green tourism due to its diverse natural resources and cultural richness. He highlights the proven attractiveness of the renewable energy sector, which has garnered the highest total global investment in the last four years. "Green Tourism is our opportunity and attraction, and there must indeed be a commitment to the development of quality and sustainable tourism. The Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, in various programs, consistently adheres to the principle of quality and sustainable tourism as Indonesia's primary tourism goal," states Uno. One such initiative is the introduction of tourism villages aimed at ensuring an equitable distribution of tourism and stimulating local economies. Uno notes that the village tourism program received accolades at the World Travel Mart (WTM) in London, securing awards such as the Indonesian Village Tourism Award and sustainable village tourism certification. The pinnacle of recognition came from the UNWTO, designating Penglipuran Village as the Best Tourism Village of 2023.
