Despite being in its early stages, Indonesia's electric motorcycle industry has ventured into export markets, notably Malaysia. As the domestic electric vehicle ecosystem continues to evolve, prospects for expanding the clean energy vehicle export market appear promising. Budihardjo Iduansjah, Chairman of the Indonesian Retailers and Mall Lessees Association (Hippindo), revealed that electric motorcycle exports to Malaysia are already underway, marked by the opening of Indonesian electric motorcycle stores in the neighboring country. The initial export features the United brand, with 2,000 units shipped, totaling approximately IDR 80 billion. Budihardjo highlighted this as a milestone, making United the first locally manufactured automotive brand to export from Indonesia, as stated during the Inabuyer EV Expo at Smesco Jakarta. Aside from Malaysia, other countries present potential markets for electric motorcycle exports. However, market expansion should occur gradually while maintaining a focus on penetrating the domestic market.
Moreover, the Indonesian government continues to provide a subsidy of IDR 7 million per unit for new electric motorcycle purchases, particularly for manufacturers meeting the Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements exceeding 40 percent. Budihardjo emphasized the vast potential for Indonesia in the electric vehicle sector, especially in electric motorcycles. In the Indonesian market, United has introduced four electric motorcycle models eligible for subsidies. These include the TX 3000 priced at IDR 50.9 million in Jakarta, the TX 1800 at IDR 34.9 million, the T1800 at IDR 31.9 million, and the most affordable MX 1200 at IDR 15.8 million. These prices do not account for the IDR 7 million subsidy. Deputy Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga provided insights into Indonesia's trade performance, noting a trade surplus of USD 31.2 billion from January to October 2023. This surplus underscores higher export values compared to imports, challenging claims of continued imports. Jerry highlighted that 74.2 percent of exported goods were industrial products, indicating processed goods. To support electric motorcycle businesses, Indonesia has established 46 trade representatives globally, including at the WTO Embassy, KDEI Taipei, Trade Consulates, 24 Trade Attachés, and 19 Indonesia Trade Promotion Centers. These global networks enable electric motorcycle industry players to promote local products effectively.
