The direct export volume of live groupers from Belitung Regency, Bangka Belitung Islands Province, to Hong Kong has reached 101 tons by November. Firdaus Zamri, the Head of the Belitung Fisheries Department, stated on Monday in Tanjung Pandan that this year's shipment of live groupers from Belitung to Hong Kong has increased compared to the previous year, rising from 33 tons to 101 tons. "We can report that the export volume of Belitung live grouper during the November 2023 period has reached 101 tons, up from the previous year's 33 tons," he said. According to him, the increase in the export of live groupers from Belitung to Hong Kong is attributed to the high interest or market demand for Belitung groupers in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has remained the primary market for the export of live groupers from various breeders in Belitung. "After experiencing a decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now the export of live groupers from Belitung to Hong Kong is revitalized," he stated. He mentioned that the 101 tons of Belitung live groupers came from nine shipments, including 8 tons on January 6, 14 tons on January 9, and 14 tons on February 25. Subsequent shipments were on March 18 with 7 tons, May 14 with 14 tons, June 12 with 10 tons, August 11 with 8 tons, August 19 with 13 tons, and November 5 with 13 tons. Firdaus highlighted that the increase in the export volume of live groupers from Belitung to Hong Kong is undoubtedly a positive trend for grouper breeders in the region. "At present, Hong Kong is willing to purchase groupers of any size. This is very beneficial and makes it easier for grouper breeders in Belitung compared to last year," he said. He hopes that the increase in the export of live groupers from Belitung to Hong Kong will enhance the well-being of grouper breeders on Belitung Island. "We hope this will have a positive impact on the welfare of grouper breeders, especially since we received news that the prices of groupers in Hong Kong have increased by around IDR 10,000 for all types of groupers," he added.
