Accelerating Shrimp Exports to Europe and China with Strategic Strategies

The implementation of good aquaculture practices for shrimp commodities is a manifestation of the Blue Economy spirit. China has become a potential trading partner for Indonesia. In 2024, the Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) aims to achieve a production target of 2 million tons. Through the application of good aquaculture practices for shrimp farming, they are promoting the principles of the blue economy. The Director-General of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, explained that there are five main countries as export destinations for shrimp commodities. These include the United States (US), the European Union (EU), ASEAN countries, Japan, and China. The primary shrimp market is currently the United States. However, KKP is making continuous efforts to increase shrimp exports to importing countries such as China, which is a potential trading partner for Indonesia. The government continues to work towards ensuring that Indonesian shrimp production remains competitive with other shrimp-exporting countries. In shrimp marketing strategies, the ability to trace products is the most crucial aspect of quality assurance and food safety. It allows shrimp products to meet international standards and be accepted by importing countries like China.

Erwin Dwiyana, Director of Marketing at the Directorate-General for Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fisheries Products (PDSPKP) of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), reported that Indonesia's fisheries exports in January-June 2023 amounted to approximately USD 2.8 billion. Based on export value, the most widely exported commodities after shrimp are tuna and giant tiger prawns, which are mainly sent to Japan. He stated that the potential fishery production in Indonesia could reach 12 million tons per year, a figure that is expected to continue rising with various activities in the capture fisheries and aquaculture sectors. "Through the application of good aquaculture practices, Indonesian products will be competitive in the international market. Good aquaculture practices provide quality and food safety assurance. It also considers environmental sustainability, health aspects, and socio-economic factors such as the welfare of aquaculture farmers," Haeru explained. Currently, KKP is promoting sustainable shrimp farming development, including the construction of area-based shrimp farming models (BUBK) in Kebumen, Central Java, and through the Infrastructure Improvement for Shrimp Aquaculture Project (IISAP).
