The Mechanical Industry for the Food & Beverage Sector 'Made in Italy' Valued at EUR 15.7 Billion

The Italian mechanical sector catering to the food and beverage industry stands as a beacon of manufacturing excellence, exhibiting consistent revenue growth despite economic challenges. This sector maintains a strong international orientation, with promising prospects for further development. Presented at the "Cibus Tec" 2023 trade fair in Parma by Emanuele Di Faustino of Nomisma, the report highlights the significance of this sector. With over 2,100 active companies, it generated an impressive turnover of 15.7 billion euros in 2022, providing employment for more than 61,000 workers. This sector, encompassing packaging, bottling, and food processing, is celebrated as a cornerstone of the 'Made in Italy' brand. The sector's performance demonstrates an upward trajectory, with a 7.6% increase in turnover compared to 2019 and an 11.7% rise in the workforce. International markets play a pivotal role, with an 8 billion euro export in 2022 and a promising 16.4% growth in the first half of 2023.

Machinery and equipment dedicated to packaging contribute significantly to Italy's exports in this sector, accounting for half of the total. Food processing technologies represent 31%, followed by machines for bottling at 19%. Over the past decade, machinery for packaging and food production has been the primary driver of export growth. Notably, the United States plays a significant role, along with the European Union, Latin America, non-EU Europe, and the Far East, with a strong presence in China. The report anticipates continued growth, both in established and emerging markets. Opportunities for expansion are seen in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and emerging markets in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. However, challenges loom, including a global economic slowdown and geopolitical uncertainties. International competition, primarily from China, adds complexity to the sector. Nevertheless, the 'Made in Italy' machinery industry remains poised for expansion, both in established and emerging regions. In summary, Italy's machinery sector for the food and beverage industry is a symbol of growth and international success, making substantial economic contributions and holding the promise of further expansion in the years ahead.
