Indonesia Aims to Boost 'Sunflower Farms' Production, Targeting Exports to the United States

Indonesia is set to promote the photovoltaic industry, commonly known as solar power generation (PLTS), with a focus on capturing the American market. Minister for Economic Affairs Coordination, Airlangga Hartarto, emphasized that this industry currently relies on China for 95% of its supply. However, he noted that the United States intends to reduce its imports from China beginning in 2025, presenting an opportunity for Indonesia to drive the growth of the photovoltaic sector.

Airlangga underlined the potential for the photovoltaic industry to become a significant and successful product similar to steel. Indonesia possesses a wealth of materials necessary for building a "solar garden," including silica and quartz sand. The minister suggested that by establishing a semiconductor industry, Indonesia could enhance its role in the photovoltaic sector. This strategic push into photovoltaics aligns with Indonesia's National Energy Strategic Plan, which prioritizes Solar Power Plants (PLTS) as part of its renewable energy strategy, aiming for a 23% share of renewable energy by 2025. The country is also exploring innovative solar projects such as floating solar power plants, leveraging its abundant sunlight resources.

This shift toward solar energy aligns with Indonesia's long-term goal of reducing or eliminating fossil fuel imports and transitioning toward renewable energy sources. Indonesia aims to diversify its energy portfolio by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and increasing the utilization of renewable energy, and the photovoltaic industry plays a pivotal role in achieving these objectives.
