Minister of National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Agency affirmed that the OECD Development of Guidance of Sustainable Ocean Economy would serve as a guide for implementing the blue economy in Indonesia. In line with the principles of creating added value and quality employment, this initiative will ensure an inclusive and sustainable path towards blue economic development. Indonesia has 95% of its population residing within 100 kilometers of the coastline, and 40 million rural residents depend on the sea for their food and livelihood. The blue economy employs 7 million people, and 40 percent of global maritime trade passes through Indonesia. The annual value of Indonesia's maritime economy reaches over USD 280 billion, with marine development and manufacturing as its two main sectors. Indonesia's blue economy grew by 10.5% per year from 2012 to 2022, surpassing the national growth rate of 5 percent. National marine fisheries production had a trade surplus of USD 4.12 billion in 2018, indicating significant demand from international markets. Indonesia needs to enhance the maritime industry's contribution to the national GDP, which reached 2.04%, compared to the national GDP growth rate of 3.69% in 2021.
The strategy for developing the blue economy in Indonesia includes launching the National Blue Agenda Action Partnership, partnering with Stanford University in the Blue Food Assessment, and establishing the Indonesia Blue Economy Roadmap. This roadmap encompasses six major sectors, including maritime transportation and logistics, marine fisheries and agriculture, marine tourism, marine renewable energy, marine biotechnology, and coastal spatial management. The Indonesia Blue Economy Roadmap outlines our commitment to balancing socio-economic growth with environmental sustainability. As the ASEAN Chair for 2023, Indonesia successfully made the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework a reference for sharing data analysis, technical expertise, funding and resources, capacity enhancement, and knowledge transfer in the blue economy. Indonesia invite the OECD to join us in advancing Indonesia's Blue Economy and the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework in 2024. Together, we can work towards more sustainable, prosperous, and equitable marine values for the future of the world, Indonesia, the ASEAN region, and beyond.
