Initiation of Indonesian Seaweed Downstreaming Development

The Indonesian government is focusing on the next flagship export commodity, seaweed, and its downstream development. President Joko Widodo has unveiled plans for the downstream processing of seaweed in Indonesia. Drawing inspiration from the successful downstream processing of nickel, which increased exports from IDR 7 trillion to IDR 15 trillion, the President is optimistic about the imminent progress of seaweed processing. A pilot project for seaweed downstream processing has already been initiated in Bali, specifically in the waters of Buleleng. This project is one of five areas targeted for developing Indonesia's seaweed downstream industry, alongside Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi), Southeast Maluku (Maluku), Rote Ndao (East Nusa Tenggara), and West Nusa Tenggara.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, emphasized the President's directive for the development of these five locations, aiming to set an example of sustainable production enhancement while maintaining the ecosystem's integrity. The government is currently integrating the entire ecosystem, from upstream to downstream, in these regions. The downstream processing encompasses post-harvest handling, modernized drying techniques, packaging, supply chain management, and necessary infrastructure provision. President Jokowi envisions that if the seaweed industry's downstream processing flourishes, its export value will significantly rise, with potential applications extending to pharmaceuticals and other sectors.

Nevertheless, the substantial challenge lies in the production of processed seaweed products. Data from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) indicates that 80% of seaweed exports from Indonesia consist of dried processed forms, while only 20% are exported as processed products. Despite this, Indonesia's seaweed export has contributed around 16.4% globally, amounting to USD 600 million. Processed seaweed holds promise not only for the pharmaceutical sector but also as fertilizer, feed, and even as a key player in Indonesia's focus on energy transition.
