East Kalimantan’s Economic Growth in The Second Quarter of 2023 Driven by Various Sectors

The economic growth of East Kalimantan Province (East Kalimantan) in the second quarter of 2023 reached a positive number. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) East Kalimantan showed economic growth of 6.84% in the period. This figure has increased significantly from the second quarter of 2022 which only reached 3.62%. According to the Head of BPS East Kalimantan, Yusniar Juliana, East Kalimantan's economic growth comes from positive performance in various business sectors. One of the sticking out is the construction sector which contributed the most with growth of 22.12%. However, the mining and quarrying sector also continues to have a significant impact on East Kalimantan's economic growth. This extractive sector continues to be an important pillar for the East Kalimantan economy, contributing 40.69% to the overall Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).
In terms of expenditure, the government consumption sector was the main driver with growth of 34.74%. This is due to an increase in employee spending, goods, services, and social assistance provided by the government. Meanwhile, investment also grew by 14.25% in the form of gross fixed capital formation, indicating an increase in investment in East Kalimantan. Regionally, East Kalimantan's economic growth is also the highest among other provinces on the island of Kalimantan. East Kalimantan's contribution to the GDP of Kalimantan Island reached 47.14%. In fact, East Kalimantan's economic growth exceeded the national economic growth which only reached 5.12% in the second quarter of 2023.
