Processing Industry Supports Economic Growth in the Second Quarter of 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that the processing industry is the biggest support for economic growth in the second quarter of 2023 in terms of business fields. The processing industry contributed 18.25% and grew 4.88% in the second quarter of 2023. The growth of the processing industry is supported by strong domestic and global demand. The growth of the business sector is supported by several sub-sectors. First, the food and beverage manufacturing industry which grew by 4.62%. This was driven by an increase in crude palm oil (CPO) and crude palm kernel oil, as well as an increase in food and beverage consumption during Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Fitr. Second, the base metal industry grew 11.49%, driven by increasing demand for exports of steel and ferronickel commodities.


Meanwhile, the transportation equipment industry grew by 9.66%, which was driven by an increase in domestic and foreign demand, especially environmentally friendly electrification vehicles. The agricultural sector grew 2.02% and contributed up to 13.35% to economic growth in the second quarter of 2023. Third, the trade sector grew 5.25% and contributed 12.85% to economic growth in the second quarter of 2023. Then, the transportation and warehousing sector grew 15.28% and contributed 5.87% to the growth in the second quarter of 2023. The air transport subsector grew 32.88%, driven by an increase in the number of air transport passengers in line with the increase in domestic and foreign tourist arrivals.


The sea freight subsector grew 18.26%, driven by an increase in the number of passengers and goods. Rail freight also grew 19.4% driven by an increase in the number of passengers and goods. This is in line with the increase in mobility after the abolition of PPKM at the end of 2022 and holiday moments. If broken down by business field, economic growth in the second quarter of 2023 is divided into manufacturing by 0.98%; trade 0.68%; transportation and warehousing 0.63%; information and communication 0.51%; and accumulation from other sectors of 2.37%.
