To Establish the World's Halal Industry Center, Indonesia Must Outdo Malaysia

Bank Indonesia has prepared three pillars to support Indonesia's goal of becoming the world's halal industry center by 2024. These pillars encompass strengthening the Sharia economic ecosystem, the Sharia financial sector, and promoting the halal lifestyle. Deputi Governor of Bank Indonesia, Juda Agung, expressed full support for the program aiming to realize Indonesia's position as a global halal industry hub by 2024 during the Festival Jawa Tengah Syariah (FAJAR) event at Hotel Gumaya Semarang on August 2.

President Joko Widodo's administration has set a target to position Indonesia as the global halal industry center by 2024, which is considered feasible given Indonesia's status as the country with the largest Muslim population worldwide. Juda highlighted that Indonesia's global position in the Sharia industry is not yet at the top. For instance, in terms of halal food, Indonesia ranks third, trailing behind Malaysia. Similarly, in Muslim-friendly tourism, Indonesia is not among the top 10 destinations globally.

Juda emphasized the need for Indonesia to attract more Muslim tourists from various countries, not just Islamic countries, but also non-Muslim-majority countries like Japan, Korea, and the UK, where there is increasing competition to cater to Muslim travelers. Currently, various ministries and stakeholders are collaborating to realize Indonesia's vision as the global halal industry center by 2024.

The FAJAR event in 2023 is expected to accelerate the expansion of the halal ecosystem, particularly in the Muslim-friendly tourism sector. This collective effort aims to support Indonesia's ambition to become a prominent player in the global halal market.
