The Halal Industry Needs to be Boosted to Become a Mainstay of Exports

The Indonesian halal industry has immense potential and should be further developed to become a leading global player, according to Teguh Dartanto, the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Indonesia (UI). With a Muslim middle-class population and a strong creative industry in this sector, Indonesia can become a global halal hub. The Ministry of Industry projects that spending by Indonesian Muslims on halal products and services will increase by around 14.96% in 2025, reaching a value of USD 281.6 billion. This makes Indonesia the largest consumer market for halal products globally, accounting for approximately 11.34% of global halal expenditure. Furthermore, Indonesia's halal industry is estimated to be worth USD 135 billion, positioning the country as the fourth-largest Islamic economy in the world. Teguh emphasizes the need for Indonesia to develop halal products and export markets that extend beyond conventional markets, targeting emerging Muslim countries and untapped markets in North Africa and the northern Middle East. This approach can not only boost the halal industry but also benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) and reduce the potential impact of global recessions on the country's trade balance.

To leverage this potential, the Faculty of Economics and Business at UI is focused on developing high-quality human resources. They offer programs in Islamic Economics and Islamic Business, and their Center for Islamic Economics and Business conducts research in this field. FEB UI is developing specialized international classes for Islamic business and economics, aiming to produce globally competitive talent in these areas. By nurturing talent and promoting accreditation of international Islamic business and economics education, UI is positioning itself to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the halal industry. Through these efforts, Indonesia aims to enhance its position as a leading player in the global halal market and capitalize on the significant economic opportunities it presents.
