Breaking into the Thailand-China market, the export of cardamom from North Sumatra (Sumut) has reached IDR 18.5 billion in the first semester of 2023. The percentage increase even reached 156.9%. Based on data from IQ-Fast Agricultural Quarantine in Belawan, the export value of cardamom to China and Thailand from January to June 2023 reached IDR 18.5 billion with a volume of 267 tons. This figure represents a significant increase compared to the same period in 2022, which amounted to IDR 7.2 billion with a volume of 126 tons. The Belawan Agricultural Quarantine facilitated the export certification of 30 tons of cardamom bound for China, which will be transported by an integrated ship not too long ago according to the Head of Belawan Agricultural Quarantine (KPB).Before being exported, officials would ensure the safety and freedom from pests and diseases of the cardamom to be shipped. The inspection process includes checking the completeness of documents, physical condition of the commodity, sampling for laboratory testing, verifying the type, quantity, volume, and having the General Administration Custom of China (GACC) registration number. Once declared free from insects, KPB will issue the KT10 Phytosanitary certificate, indicating that the cardamom is suitable for export. In addition to cardamom, The Belawan Agricultural Quarantine stated that North Sumatra also have various spices that often exported to advanced countries, including cloves, cinnamon bark, gambier, galangal, candlenut, and others.
