Indonesia's PT. Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), located in Pulau Obi, South Halmahera, North Maluku Province, has officially made its first export of 5,584 tons of nickel sulfate, packaged in 290 containers, to China. This nickel sulfate plant, owned by PT. Trimegah Bangun Persada (Harita Nickel), refines nickel ore into nickel sulfate, which will be used in the production of high-nickel lithium batteries. Roy Arfandy, the CEO of NCKL, stated that the inaugural export of nickel sulfate from their subsidiary's plant is expected to position Indonesia as a key player in the electric vehicle battery industry. He emphasized the significance of this milestone in contributing to the country's economy, both at the regional and national levels. NCKL aims to target an annual export of 240,000 tons of nickel sulfate, with plans to send approximately four ships to meet the demand for production. Additionally, PT. HPL aspires to become an environmentally focused manufacturing company that contributes to society and promotes industrial development.
The world's largest nickel sulfate plant operates with the best mining and downstream operations. Septian Hario Seto, the Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, mentioned during the inauguration of PT. HPL in May that the company has received international certifications for its mining and production processes. In addition to nickel sulfate, PT. HPL's plant is also undergoing production trials for cobalt sulfate. These two commodities are crucial elements in the formation of precursor cathodes for electric vehicle batteries.
