Riau has recorded a significant increase in its export sector in May 2023. According to data released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Riau, the export value of Riau Province reached USD 1.41 billion in that month, experiencing a growth of 8.14% compared to April 2023. Similarly, non-oil and gas exports from Riau also exhibited strong growth, reaching USD 1.27 billion, with an increase of 6.68% compared to the previous month. The total contribution of Riau's exports to the national exports reached 6.56 percent. However, if we look at the cumulative data from January to May 2023, the export value of Riau has decreased by 11.96%, amounting to USD 7.44 billion compared to the same period last year. It was also stated that the same trend also applies to non-oil and gas exports, which experienced a decline of 10.78%, reaching USD 6.82 billion. On the other hand, the import value of Riau in May 2023 reached USD 228.60 million, showing an increase of 2.04% compared to April 2023.
However, non-oil and gas imports in Riau during the same month experienced a decrease of 5.16%, amounting to USD 195.38 million. The total contribution of Riau's imports to the national imports is 1.23%. Cumulatively, from January to May 2023, the import value of Riau has increased by 3.04 percent, reaching USD 1.16 billion compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, non-oil and gas imports reached USD 1.08 billion, experiencing a growth of 4.79%. Riau's trade balance in May 2023 recorded a surplus of $1.18 billion, making the total surplus during the period from January to May 2023 reach USD 6.28 billion. The increase in the export value of Riau is good news for the regional economy. Although there is a cumulative decrease compared to the previous year, the positive export results in May indicate ongoing recovery potential. It is hoped that this trend will continue, and Riau's exports can contribute even more significantly to the national economic growth.
