Agam Achieves 374.40 Tons of Vannamei Shrimp Production

Dinas Ketahanan Pangan dan Perikanan (Food Security and Fisheries Agency) of Agam Regency in West Sumatra recorded a production of 374.40 tons of vannamei shrimp in the area during the first quarter from January to March 2023. The shrimp production came from several ponds along the coastline in Gadang Ketek and Banda Gadang in Nagari Tiku Selatan. It also extended to Pasia Paneh, Muaro Putih, Ujuang Labuang, and other areas in Nagari Tiku Lima Jorong. The cultivation of vannamei shrimp in Agam has rapidly expanded along the coastline of Tanjungmutiara District, according to the Head of Dinas Ketahanan Pangan dan Perikanan Agam, Rosva Deswira.

The cultivation of vannamei shrimp began in the region in 2020 and has been thriving since then. The shrimp's production is exported to neighboring countries and also caters to the local market. The price of vannamei shrimp is relatively high, ranging from IDR 60,000 to IDR 100,000 per kilogram. Originating from subtropical areas along the western coast of America to Peru, vannamei shrimp has been widely cultivated in Indonesia as an alternative option after the decline in production of giant tiger shrimp (udang windu) due to environmental degradation.

Vannamei shrimp is considered one of Indonesia's promising and highly potential marine commodities, making it a lucrative sector for further development and expansion. The success of vannamei shrimp cultivation in Agam Regency showcases the potential for sustainable growth and economic benefits in the local fisheries industry.
