Rupiah Weakens to 14,065/US$

Wed, May 16, 2018 | The rupiah's inter-bank exchange rate in Jakarta on Wednesday morning was corrected 35 bps to trade for 14,065 per US dollar.

Bisnis.com reported that at 08:23 Jakarta time the spot opened with a 0.24-percent decline at 14,070 per US dollar. The rupiah remained at Rp14,070 per US dollar as the Jakarta Composite Index opened 0.98 percent lower at 5,780.88.

Bank Indonesia Governor Agus D.W. Martowardojo had ensured that the series of attacks in Surabaya and Sidoarjo will not weaken the rupiah further.

Nevertheless, he said that domestic conditions are indeed an important sentiment that will always be monitored by investors.

"The bomb attacks yesterday gave little influence to the exchange rate," he said, in Jakarta, Tuesday, May 15.

Agus said the impact will be brief, especially since Indonesia's fundamentals are in good condition. He also appealed to the public not to panic and worried about excessive fluctuations.

The central bank reiterates its commitment to intervene the market to maintain rupiah stability, despite the rupiah's correction being far better than neighboring countries' currencies.
