To improve the people's economy, the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo (Mentan SYL) encouraged each region to develop a closed-loop model of goat farming in Indonesia. This was conveyed by Minister of Agriculture SYL when visiting Rajendra Farm of Goat and Sheep Farm in Kulonprogo Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta Province on Tuesday (14/2).
According to the Minister of Agriculture SYL, closed-loop is an approach to encourage the development of sustainable agribusiness that is integrated from upstream to downstream which can increase economies of scale, farmer's income, and increase productivity.
"This model is expected to be a system for empowering and increasing business scale as well as creating an ecosystem, so that it can increase the income of farmers which has an impact on the welfare of farmers," said SYL.
SYL also greatly appreciates the form of synergy that has occurred between the central, provincial and district governments, as well as breeders who are members of the Yogyakarta Sheep Breeders Association (PPKDY) in the efforts to develop Closed Loop Goat and Sheep Farms that have been carried out.
"This livestock development model like at Rajendra Farm is truly extraordinary and can be used as an example or role model for other breeders," said SYL proudly.
"Of course this needs to be encouraged to increase the role and contribution of goat and sheep commodities in fulfilling the need for animal protein, who needs goats, starting from application and death, they need goats," said SYL.
"As an export-oriented commodity, of course it must be sustainable by applying the right model," he said.
SYL also said that the Ministry of Agriculture is pushing for more development of goat and sheep farms with a closed loop model like this so that it can be applied to all farms and stake holders.
"My hope is that every province will have a model like this, so that the welfare of breeders and the security of food products from livestock in Indonesia can be achieved," he explained.
Furthermore, he said that the Ministry of Agriculture has partnered with banks in facilitating community farms that have carried out breeding and cultivation businesses to take advantage of People's Business Credit (KUR) as an effort to strengthen access to financing for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in improving the quality of seeds, accelerating population growth. to increase productivity, which in turn will increase national meat production.
"Please use the KUR which has been facilitated by the government to help breeders, especially goats and sheep, who hope to become a booster in agriculture," he said.
On the same occasion, the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health (Dirjen PKH) Nasrullah mentioned the strategic role of the goat and sheep commodity as an important export commodity for the development of livestock and animal health.
He also revealed that the need for live sheep/goats in a religious context such as the fulfillment of aqiqah and qurban animals is increasing, and on the other hand the potential for sheep/goat exports is also very high. Exports of live goats and sheep and their products in 2020 began to be recorded at IDR 10.2 billion.
Meanwhile, the Regent of Kulonprogo, Tri Saktijana said, Rajendra Farm is one of the farms that has combined commodity lines, and has even processed commodities, thus adding added value to commodities, even livestock here has become a halal lifestyle.
"This is a good example, so that it can attract other breeders, especially millennial breeders, because here it is also being developed as an agro-tourism site, it has even been able to meet the needs of goats and sheep for Singaporean Muslims in carrying out the qurbani worship," he concluded.
