The Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs (KemenKopUKM) through Smesco Indonesia facilitates the registration and management of intellectual property rights (HAKI) for MSME trademarks. Main Director of Smesco Indonesia Leonard Theosabrata said, the ease of managing intellectual property rights through Smesco is the result of collaboration with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. This collaboration has been integrated in a single data system. "This artificial intelligence (AI)-based system makes it easier when mitigating MSMEs registered through Smesco, making it easier for the Ministry of Law and Human Rights to classify documents required for IPR processing," he said in a press release, Wednesday (8/2/2023). Meanwhile, Smesco is currently registering the intellectual property rights of one UMKM named Hellyeah Food. "Indonesia has more than a hundred Indonesian chili recipes, so by registering the IPR for the chili and its brand by the MSME owner of the recipe, the state will automatically protect hundreds of types of intellectual property inherited from the archipelago," said Leonard. Hellyeah Food is a chili-producing MSME owned by two brothers, namely Irdham Arbina Nurdiansyah and Marlangen Perwita.
Hellyeah has been officially registered as a local brand and as one of the original archipelago chili recipes that has legal force as an officially registered product and recipe. Furthermore, for Smesco, Hellyeah is one of the representatives of SME chili producers in Indonesia which consistent in running its business starting from a home business since 2011. Taking care of intellectual property rights through Smesco Indonesia does not need to come directly to Smesco. MSME actors only need to consult online with the SMESCO UKM Service Staff and then send the required documents via email. "After that, the IPR registration is immediately processed and the registration report is sent back to us. It's not a hassle at all because the process is easy, fast, and the service staff is responsive. This process really saves time, effort, and thoughts," he said. On the other hand, the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Uno said his party was encouraging creative economy actors including MSMEs to maximize Intellectual Property-based financing schemes.
