Papua's Economy Grows 8.97% in 2022, BPS: Driven by the Transportation and Export Sector

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) for Papua Province stated that the regional economy would grow 8.97% in 2022 compared to 2021. This figure was driven by the start of the economic recovery from the impact of COVID-19. Head of BPS Papua Adriana Helena Carolina said from the production side, the largest growth occurred in the transportation and warehousing business field of 16.85%. "While from the expenditure side, the highest growth occurred in the foreign export component of 40.27% ," he said in Jayapura, Tuesday, February 7, 2023. According to Adriana, this growth was due to an increase in departing passengers, loading goods and shipping services both land, sea and air, due to the opening of all transportation access and the relaxation of health protocols compared to the previous year.

"Apart from that, other business fields that experienced high growth were mining and quarrying by 16.13% and electricity and gas procurement by 6.7% ," he said. He explained that Papua's economic growth in 2022, which was recorded to grow 8.97%, is the share of all business fields, especially business fields that make a major contribution to the Papuan economy. "That is the mining and quarrying business field which contributed 38.60% , then construction by 13.75%, then agriculture, forestry and fisheries by 10.30%," he said again. He added, based on the size of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in Papua, at current prices in 2022 it reached IDR 262.52 trillion and at constant 2010 prices it reached IDR 172.90 trillion.
