The Two Sectors Supporting Sharia Economic Growth

Bank Indonesia (BI) projects that the Islamic economy will still grow positively in 2023 to support national economic growth. The two main sectors supporting the growth of this Islamic economy are agriculture and also halal tourism. BI Deputy Governor Juda Agung said, amidst various global pressures and their propagating impact on the Indonesian economy, the sharia economy continues to grow to support the domestic economy. The leading sector of the halal value chain, which consists of the agricultural sector, halal food and beverages, Muslim fashion and Muslim-friendly tourism, continues to improve, especially driven by the performance of Muslim-friendly tourism and the agricultural sector. In the third quarter of 2022, the halal value chain sector grew by 5.5%, higher than growth in the same period in 2021 which was 1.69%.

With the large domestic sharia economic and financial potential, Juda said several challenges and homework still had to be completed together. Among other things, the growth of sharia business is still limited when compared to the great potential, both to meet domestic needs and in the framework of exports. According to Juda, this condition is caused by the low halal sector upstream. The halal certification process is also not optimal, and the domestic market and export market hubs are also not optimal. "Utilizing new opportunities in the Islamic economy such as Muslim-friendly tourism, in the pharmaceutical, media and so on, we also need to increase this," said Juda. Another challenge is in terms of finance and financing, as well as the low level of literacy. From the results of a national survey on Indonesian financial literacy and inclusion conducted by OJK, the Islamic financial literacy index is only 9.14%, while the Islamic financial inclusion index reaches 12.12%.
