Cloves and Nutmeg Are Still Main Commodities of North Sulawesi

Cloves and nutmeg are the main commodities of North Sulawesi Province (North Sulawesi). The Head of the North Sulawesi Plantation Service, Jettij Roring said, The development of this clove and nutmeg commodity continues to be developed in the Province of North Sulawesi. Cloves, for example, are almost spread across districts/cities in North Sulawesi. The current government continues to intensify and extensify. We will increase the yield of commodities with existing services, then expand the existing land," he told tribunmanado.co.id, Tuesday (6/12/2022). In addition, the plantation crop rejuvenation program is continuing. "That's why the Plantation Service always provide assistance with plantation plant seeds, cloves and nutmeg, some of them, there are also coconuts, coffee and sissy," he said. Especially now that the plantation sector has become the prima donna of the government, after the Covid 19 Pandemic. Governor Olly Dondokambey's government has also continued to promote the Mari Program. Jo Bakobong, the Nutmeg and Clove plantation sector also received special attention considering that these plants have long been the mainstay commodity of North Sulawesi, even for export.

Lately, there has been no big clove harvest like in past years. "Since 2020 there hasn't been a big harvest, because the weather is a lot of rain, the clove flowers usually fall," he said. However, cloves can still be harvested by farmers, although not on a large harvest scale. According to Roring, the price is still good, although there has been a slight decrease. Meanwhile, Nutmeg Commodity, North Sulawesi has the world's best quality nutmeg. This nutmeg plant mainly spreads on Siau Island, Siau Tagulandang Biaro Regency, spreads to Sangihe and Talaud. Nutmeg prices from year to year remain stable, so that the development of this crop continues to receive the priority attention of farmers. As for observing data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) for North Sulawesi, the development of nutmeg and clove plantations tends to be stable. Cloves in 2014 were planted in a total area of 76,599.81 hectares. In its development from year to year it tends to be stable, although there is a slight decrease in area, in 2021 it will decrease to 72,424 Ha.
