The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf) Sandiaga Uno acknowledged that the creative economy sector made the largest contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), amounting to 7.38% of the total national economy with a total GDP of around IDR 852.24 trillion. Of the total contribution, the culinary, craft and fashion sub-sectors make the largest contribution to the creative economy. Sandiaga said that the fashion sub-sector, especially hijab production, must continue to be optimized. "We have to seize the market and become champions in our own country. This is a potential business opportunity and is capable of opening the widest possible employment opportunities for the community, so we must optimize it," said Sandiaga.
Data from the World Economic Forum (WEF) regarding the consumption of Indonesian hijabs during 2022 recorded a figure of 1.02 billion per year, with a transaction value of around USD 6.09 billion or the equivalent of IDR 91.135 trillion. However, only 25% of the headscarves purchased by Indonesians are produced locally. For this reason, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy continues to boost the creative economy sector by launching various programs, as well as providing convenience for creative economy entrepreneurs. Among other things, through the Indonesian Creation Appreciation program, facilitating the registration of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), as well as the Proud Made in Indonesia (BBI) stimulus program.
"Not only proud of being made in Indonesia, but also proud of buying local creative products. Local pride! That must be instilled, so that this extraordinary potential can have a direct impact on society," said Sandiaga. Hijab itself is a halal product that has a promising local market and can become a leading commodity. In particular, considering that Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, there are 236.53 million people or 86.88% of the total 272.23 million people in June 2021. Referring to WEF data, global hijab spending will increase by 5.7% in 2021, up from USD 279 billion to USD 295 billion. The sector is expected to grow 6% to USD 313 billion by 2022. "This projection proves the size of the world hijab market. Therefore, this business opportunity must be optimized to create jobs and business opportunities," said Sandiaga.
