The Indonesian Embassy in London held the "Indonesia Coffee Day" (ICD) 2022 event to promote Indonesian specialty coffee to coffee businesses in the UK. The Indonesia Coffee Day event is part of a series of "Experience Indonesia" activities in London which will be held on Monday 7 November 2022, according to the Indonesian Embassy in London, received on Tuesday. "Post-pandemic Covid 19, we must pursue to rise up, be alert and responsive," said the Indonesian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Desra Believe. To accelerate the economic recovery, there are still many opportunities to increase Indonesia's exports, including mainstay commodities such as coffee," he explained again. Ambassador Desra opened the ICD 2022 event which was attended by around 30 participants from coffee roasters, cafe owners and other relevant stakeholders in the UK. "Indonesia Coffee Day is one way to facilitate and open market access, by gathering a network of trusted British coffee importers with quality coffee exporters from Indonesia," he said.
The event was also filled with talk shows about Indonesian coffee and the coffee market in the UK, with speakers from the British Coffee Association and 5758 Coffee Lab from Indonesia. The talkshow is expected to provide an opportunity for knowledge exchange and coffee trade between Indonesia and the UK. Especially regarding the understanding of regulations and standards to accelerate business relations in the future, said the Indonesian Embassy in London. Visitors to Indonesia Coffee Day 2022 had the opportunity to taste several types of Indonesian coffee provided by Sucafina, 5758 Coffee Lab and Bank Indonesia London. Coffee consumption in the UK reached 120,000 tonnes of coffee in 2018 or 6.6% of the total European market. Throughout 2020 the UK imported coffee from the world to reach a value of 1 billion US dollars, but of that amount Indonesia only exported 20.1 million US dollars or 2% of the UK market share. The Indonesian Embassy in London views this condition as an opportunity as well as a challenge for efforts to export Indonesian coffee. Indonesia itself ranks as the fourth largest coffee producer in the world as of August 2021, based on data from the International Coffee Organization (ICO). The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that Indonesia's annual coffee production will reach 774.6 thousand tons in 2021. This figure is an increase of 2.75 percent compared to the previous year. In addition, 2021 is the biggest momentum for Indonesian coffee production in the last decade. Correspondingly, the UK coffee consumption market is growing, recording the fifth largest coffee market share in Europe in 2018 after Germany, Italy, France and Spain.
