Several initiatives China has proposed in recent years, most notably the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), are of great importance and benefit to the global economy and development, said an Egypt expert on Asian affairs. The BRI is very important to the global economy, said Tarek el-Sonoty, deputy editor-in-chief of Egypt's state-run Al-Ahram newspaper, in a recent interview with Xinhua, adding that through various joint infrastructure projects and mutually beneficial partnerships, China seeks to achieve mutual development and enhance bilateral and multilateral relations with partners.
Noting that China shares common interests with developing countries and seeks to promote South-South cooperation, the Egypt expert said that several Chinese initiatives such as the BRI always take developing countries into account. Sonoty explained that the BRI and several other Chinese initiatives benefit the people of China and other developing countries. "Many infrastructure projects have been carried out in many countries under the framework of the BRI, including Egypt," the Egypt expert told Xinhua, adding that Chinese companies were carrying out several mega projects in Egypt such as the construction of the New Administrative Capital east of Cairo and New Alamein City in northwestern Egypt. Sonoty said China's various initiatives would effectively promote global development, especially amid ongoing global challenges. "There is a close relationship between the Chinese economy and the global economy," he said, noting that China plays a politically and economically important role worldwide as the world's second-largest economic power. “I visited the Ningxia Hui Ethnic Autonomous Region in 2008 and when I returned about 10 years later, I found surprising changes and remarkable developments there,” the expert recalls.
