As a leading commodity for the domestic plantation sector, the coffee industry has a crucial role in national economic growth. The coffee industry has contributed as a driver of income for coffee farmers, a source of foreign exchange for the country, a producer of industrial raw materials, and a provider of jobs through processing, marketing, and export and import trade. To maximize the potential of the coffee industry, the Government continues to support improvements in upstream governance, farmer institutional governance, and post-harvest governance to increase productivity, brand, and packaging standards to enter the global market. As a form of this support, Deputy II of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs attended the signing of the 1-tonne Coffee Export Contract Agreement with a value of IDR 160 million between farmers from the Temanggung Coffee Community and Ce BV of the Netherlands at the 37th Indonesian Trade Export Area, Wednesday (19/10). The agreement is one of the implementations of President Joko Widodo’s directives in the opening of Trade Export Indonesia related to efforts to boost foreign markets, including for Indonesia’s coffee commodity which has become global. In addition, the agreement can provide direct access for coffee farmers to reach buyers, to maximize the profits of coffee farmers in entering foreign markets, at competitive prices. On another occasion some time ago, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto said, "With the huge potential that exists, the coffee commodity has an important and promising role in the national economy, so it is necessary to continue to encourage it to become a leading sector in Indonesia."
Furthermore, Temanggung coffee is a single origin because it has superior quality coffee beans. It was also supported by the role of the Temanggung community and a good climate with sufficient rainfall. To date, coffee plantations in Temanggung Regency have reached 9,536.37 hectares or 23.99% of the total coffee plantation area in Central Java. Temanggung Regency also contributed to Central Java’s total coffee production of 11,560.27 tons or 56.97% of Central Java’s total coffee production. Temanggung coffee also often wins titles in national and international coffee contests with its two coffee types – Robusta and Arabica. Referring to the 2014 data, the production of the two types of coffee is very significant, with 2.4 million tons for Arabica and 10.2 million tons for Robusta. On this occasion, the Chair of Kopi Bersenyum Community or Temanggung Coffee Community, Basari Supriyanto, also expressed his appreciation for the Government's support for the development of Temanggung coffee through the implementation of the agreement, which is considered to be able to stimulate the enthusiasm of farmers in improving upstream and downstream governance and complying with sustainability and traceability principles, because the quality of the coffee commodity is largely determined by the harvest and post-harvest activities.
