The Tangkas Sheep (Domba Tangkas) culture in Garut has the potential to become a source of economic strength for West Java. Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs Teten Masduki assessed that the Tangkas Sheep would also be able to increase the tourism sector, livestock, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “Culture and the economy basically have an equal position and support each other,” said Minister Teten in a written statement on Monday (17/10/2022). He said that the combination of cultural strengths of the Garut Tangkas Sheep has great potential to encourage the economy, both in the tourism sector, sheep farming, and MSMEs. Based on the Cultural Development Index (GPA), culture and economy are one of the dimensions, namely the cultural economic dimension with indicators of residents who have sources of income as actors or supporters of performing arts.
For Minister Teten who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Indonesian Sheep and Goat Breeders Association (HPDKI), the event is one way to preserve culture and at the same time as an attraction to increase the tourism industry which has a multiplier effect to SMEs and cooperatives. "I hope this event can be included in one of the national events in the tourism sector. Thus, it can increase tourism visits for both foreign tourists and domestic tourists," said the Coordinating Minister for SMEs. Teten explained that the competition was not to find out who won and who lost because every sheep has its own characteristics. It is more of an entertainment attraction (attraction) for the audience and tourists.
