Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Calls Fashion and Culinary the Biggest Contributor to the Creative Economy

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Small Medium Enterprises (KemenkopUKM) said the creative economy sector could be a source and new economic strength. The Deputy of Entrepreneurship at the KemenkopUKM Siti Azizah noted that the fashion and the culinary sector as one of the 17 sub-sectors of Indonesia’s creative economy, made a positive contribution to the national economic recovery. “If we look at the fashion and the culinary sectors, they are part of the 17 sub-sectors of Indonesia’s creative economy that are positive even in a pandemic condition,” he said at the Arqam Accelerator Fashion & Beauty Care Demo Day 2022 at the JS Luansa Hotel, Monday (10/10/2022).


Based on data from the State of The Global Islamic Economy Report in 2019, Siti said, Indonesia was the runner-up for the country that developed the best Muslim fashion. “Indeed, Indonesia has great potential in the fashion world,” she added. Furthermore, she explained that Indonesia’s consumption of Muslim clothing has reached USD 20 billion, or equivalent to IDR 279 trillion. This figure is the third largest among member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OKI). She said, during the Covid-19 pandemic, many people paid more attention to the condition of their skin while at home. For this reason, skincare sales have increased quite dramatically. “Skincare sales have increased during the pandemic because women and men also use skincare to beautify themselves,” she said. Based on data from the Ministry of Industry, the CEO & Founder of Alami Group, Dima Djani explained the adaptation of new habits due to the Covid-19 pandemic that has shifted shopping patterns from offline to online. This can be seen by the increase in online transactions of cosmetic products by 80 percent. Meanwhile, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in the first quarter of 2020 stated that the performance of the chemical, pharmaceutical and traditional medicine industries (including the cosmetics sector) experienced a brilliant growth of 5.59 percent. This manufacturing group was also able to make a significant contribution to foreign exchange through the achievement of its export value which reached USD 317 million or around IDR 4.44 trillion in the first semester of 2020, or up 15.2 percent compared to the previous semester. “If we look at this data, we are optimistic that the Indonesian beauty fashion world will continue to grow,” he concluded.
