The Governor of West Sumatra, Mahyeldi is optimistic that the production of honey bees from the province will be in a surplus and can meet the market needs for domestic honey consumption as well as exports. "Currently, West Sumatra's honey production reaches 1 ton per month. In the future, we will continue to increase it, because the potential is extraordinary,” said Mahyeldi after opening the West Sumatra Provincial Honey Festival, held at the West Sumatra Provincial Forestry Service Office, Sunday (2/10) as published by Padangkita. The festival this time was held by the West Sumatra Provincial Forestry Service on October 1-3, 2022. Various kinds of honey are displayed in the exhibition ranging from sweet, sour, to bitter though. The honey is brought directly by farmers or groups spread across 19 areas in West Sumatra.
Mahyeldi explained that the potential for honey production from West Sumatra is very large. This is supported by the extent of social forestry which reaches more than 231 thousand hectares. This potential is added to honey which can be cultivated by each household. "There were even some of them, in the past, employees stopped and chose a honey cultivation business," said the governor, revealing the confessions of a number of honey farmers who filled the booths at the exhibition. Mahyeldi explained that the potential for honey is very large, moreover a number of farmers or cultivators have developed various honey-derived products such as propolis, bilopen, and even beauty soaps and so on.
