The halal food and beverage industry is the largest contributor to Indonesia’s halal product exports, reaching 63% of the total value of halal product exports, with the 2016-2020 period growing an average of 6.04% per year. Susiwijono Moegiarso, the Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs said that this performance created the potential for Indonesia to continue to meet the growing global demand for the halal food and beverage industry. “Malaysia is indeed the main destination for halal food exports with a market share of 43.4% of Indonesia’s total halal food exports,” said Susiwijono in a webinar, Monday, (26/9/2022). Furthermore, several export destinations for Indonesian halal food and beverages also experienced an increase, such as Syria by 65.0%, Turkey by 53.1%, and Pakistan by 51.2%. “I believe we can open market access with various global supply chain networks, the approach is not only from the government or the private sector coming to each country, but we are off-roading with multinational corporations that control the global supply network,” he said.
In addition to that, the role of the food and beverage industry has a large contribution to GDP in 2022 in the first quarter of 6.55% and the second quarter of 6.14%. In detail, the GDP growth of the food and beverage industry in the second quarter was 3.68% with a share of 6.14%. The food industry grew by 3.4% and the beverage industry grew by 14.41%, supported by increases during Ramadhan and Eid. “Utilization of the food and beverage industry sector in the first quarter of 2022 grew stable compared to the previous period and in June 2022 the utilization of the food sector was 69.50% and the beverage sector was 71.74%,” said Susiwijono. Then in terms of Purchasing Managers Index (PMI), Indonesian manufacturing experienced an expansionary increase from 50.22 in June 2022 to 51.3 in July 2022. “In terms of the industry for food and beverages, the performance is very good and the share is very large to our GDP,” he concluded.
