Weekend Stories: Breaking Weaving into the World Market

Breaking weaving into the global market still seems to be a big challenge, because the Indonesian people must be united. Even regarding the development of weaving, Designer Musa Widyatmodjo said it could not be seen evenly in all regions. He said the development of weaving is indeed advanced, especially in the Java area. However, outside Java, only a few such as East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have contributed to the agility of the local government's efforts to revive it. Weaving itself does have advantages that can attract the global community. There is a game of motifs, threads, colors, and all the elements of this fabric that can be processed and developed. The founder of Rasa Wastra Indonesia, Monique Hardjoko, said that weaving is spread throughout Indonesia, even in each village it may have its own motif. The development of weaving itself over the past 5 years is quite significant, in terms of innovation, design, coloring of the combination of motifs of woven materials, now it is not as rigid as it used to be. "In the last five years, the dyeing process that is environmentally friendly, has been widely encouraged by natural coloring. Helping out in terms of sustainable fashion or eco fashion," said Monique.

Regarding weaving innovation, according to Monique, there is a role in the regeneration of weaver artisans, which is currently not happening in all producing regions. "I have observed from trips to Bajawa and Sikka, the two places how the artisans there have empowered local children to continue to make weaving," said Monique. The young children there are encouraged by artisan weaver parents to work as artisans and develop their villages, rather than going to the city looking for work. Although, he said the parents there also gave their children freedom to choose, but they still taught how to weave. Because of that, Sikka's weaving has become even more creative with its weaving, not only having stiff materials. They create more contemporary weaving in thinner and more colorful materials. Although there are some areas that also develop designs that take natural colors according to the availability of natural resources from plant species and marine ecosystems around weaving-producing areas. Now, weaving that used to be synonymous with the impression that it was only suitable for "to be worn by mothers" has also changed its image because of the innovations made by the weavers and their generations. But of course other innovations so that weaving can be accepted globally still has a long homework to do.
