The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) through Quality Control and Fishery Product Safety (BKIPM-KKP) cooperates with the Food and Drug Association (FDA) to ensure the quality of shrimp exports as a food safety requirement in the United States (US). “We are aware that the market opportunity in the United States is still very open for Indonesian fishery products,” said the Fish Quarantine Agency, Quality Control and Safety of Fishery Products, Pamuji Lestari in a press statement, Monday (19/9/2022). Pamuji revealed since 2020 Indonesia has been ranked 2nd in the shrimp market share in the US, below India, and above Ecuador. Therefore, she wants this achievement to increase by initiating a Regulatory Partnership Agreement (RPA) to strengthen consumer confidence that Indonesian shrimp are guaranteed quality and safety. “The hope is that it will open up market access in the US, and through this WGS feasibility visit, BKIPM will open up insight into third-generation DNA sequencing technology as well as a starting point for Indonesia to enter the world-level food safety network,” she said.
She also added that the development of test methods for foodborne diseases is currently growing rapidly. This is because of the demands for the accuracy of test results, speed of identification, and traceability. Lastly, she emphasized that Indonesia is actively building a quality assurance system and food safety as well as building an international network that can support system harmonization and align Indonesia with big countries. “This is not only an effort to support trade facilitation, but also a means of transferring technology, knowledge, and experience,” Pamuji explained.
