The decrease in Covid-19 cases has made the public transportation sector slowly rise. Based on records from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) until the second quarter of this year, the transportation sector grew by 21.27%. This was conveyed by the Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi when commemorating National Transportation Day on September 17th in Palembang. “We will not rise faster if we are not together,” said Budi. He added that synergies and collaborations with transportation personnel in Indonesia were needed. Currently, efforts to recover the transportation sector are showing positive results. In addition to growth in the second quarter, the transportation sector contributed positively with a number of 5.44 percent to the national economic growth.
Many factors boost growth in the transportation sector. One is the re-management of air space over the Riau and Natuna Islands. Budi said the achievement of the transportation sector can make a significant contribution to Indonesia amid the challenges faced. He explained that there are many of homework in the transportation sector that must be completed. For example, improving connectivity and transportation safety. Indonesia as a vast archipelagic country needs connectivity with public transportation for people who are used to it.
Positive conditions are also seen in the air transportation sector. Air traffic at PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II) airports is gradually recovering in line with the control of Covid-19. AP II noted that the aviation sector this year was better than March-December 2020 and January-December 2021. The President of AP II, Muhammad Awaluddin, said that flight traffic in 2022 has increased continuously since the beginning of the year. “The number of passenger movements at AP II airports in the first quarter of 2022 is cumulatively an average of 4 million passengers per month,” he said. It is an increase compared to the first quarter of 2021, which averaged 2.3 million passengers/month.
