Export of Indonesian Leather and Footwear Products Reaches USD 4.62 Billion by Mid-2022

The leather, finished leather goods and footwear industry grew positively by 13.12% in the second quarter of 2022. This brilliant performance was included in the top three in the manufacturing sector because it was driven by high export demand as well as better investment attractiveness and the transfer of orders from several global brands to Indonesia. "Utilization of the leather, finished leather goods and footwear industry also increased by 84.49% in July 2022 when compared to utilization before the pandemic of around 80.18 percent," said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in Jakarta, Tuesday (6/9). /2022). The export value of leather, finished leather goods and footwear until June 2022 reached USD 4.62 billion, an increase of 41.26 percent compared to the same period in the previous year of USD 3.26 billion. Of this value, export distribution in the form of footwear is 86 percent, finished leather goods are 13 percent, and leather is 1%.
In fact, in the midst of global dynamics and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the industrial sector continues to show its progress through positive developments from the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) of Indonesian manufacturing. Indonesia's manufacturing PMI was 51.7 points in August 2022, up from 51.3 points in July. In order to maintain the footwear, leather and finished leather goods industry at an expansive level, the government carries out various strategic programs, including through the 35% import substitution program by 2022, with the aim of encouraging increased utilization of existing industries as well as increasing investment in Indonesia, both new investment and expansion.
