Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs Encourages Acceleration of Blue Economy Implementation in International Forums

The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs continues to encourage the acceleration of the implementation of the blue economy program, including through international forums at the Blue Economy Conference and Trade Exhibition by introducing five strategies to domestic and foreign academics. The Minister of Marine and Fisheries Affairs Sakti Wahyu Trenggono in his statement quoted in Jakarta, Tuesday, said the KKP had succeeded in achieving the target of a conservation area of 28.4 million hectares by 2021. This achievement has almost reached the target of marine conservation areas covering an area of 32.5 million hectares by 2030. To maintain fish populations and maintain carbon sequestration functions, the conservation area will be expanded with a target of 97.5 million hectares or 30% of Indonesia's territorial waters. "To maintain the sustainability of fish resources, increase regional economic growth, and improve the welfare of fishermen, KKP applies a quota-based measured fishing policy. Expansion and improvement of the quality of conservation areas covering an area of 30% will be established in six measured fishing zones," he said. The first five blue economy strategies implemented by the Indonesian government are expanding conservation areas with a target of 30 percent of the total area of Indonesian waters by prioritizing the quality of conservation areas. Second, measurable fishing based on fishing quotas and establishing conservation zones in six fishing zones. Third, the Love of the Sea Month, in which fishermen have an important role in managing waste at sea. Fourth, marine spatial planning for the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems. And fifth, the balance of marine resources is used as a tool to measure the balance and sustainability of marine resources. Furthermore, in the quota-based measurable fishing policy, the fishing area is divided into six zones. Four zones are opened for domestic and foreign investors, two zones are only for domestic investors. Fishing quotas are given to fishermen, investors and for non-commercial activities. Fishermen will get a quota of 35% of the total quota set by the government. "Measured fishing policies will provide an economic multiplier effect such as the need for labor, the fishing industry and other fishery activities. The velocity of money in measured fishing activities will reach around IDR 407 trillion per year. All measured fishing activities will be monitored through a satellite-based surveillance system," he said. In addition, there are aquaculture policies that aim to reduce the number of catches that have a significant contribution in the sea, so that fish populations are maintained and protect certain types of fish to be caught. Seaweed has a strategic value to absorb carbon and become the main raw material for other industries.
