Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs Designs Strategy to Implement Blue Economy Program

The Ministry of Marine and Fisheries Affairs (KKP) has designed a strategy to support the implementation of a blue economy-based development program in the Indonesian marine and fisheries sector. Minister of Marine and Fisheries Affairs Sakti Wahyu Trenggono said the KKP had designed five blue economy-based work programs that were believed to be able to answer global challenges, especially related to climate change whose impacts had already occurred in various countries. Trenggono explained the five blue economy strategies that his ministry had designed. Two of them are directly related to the blue carbon program, namely the expansion of marine water conservation areas including mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrasses. Then carry out the spatial planning of sea, coastal and small islands in Indonesia so that they are not damaged by economic activities. The arrangement is carried out with regulatory support, increasing synergies, to allocating space to maintain or increase blue carbon stocks. "PP Number 32 of 2019 concerning Marine Spatial Planning, has determined 15 locations as Certain National Strategic Areas (KSNT) related to environmental control in the form of blue carbon stock areas," he explained in a statement, Wednesday (10/8). Other blue economy programs include the implementation of quota-based scalable fishing, the Ocean Love Month program, and the development of environmentally friendly marine, coastal and freshwater aquaculture. "Indonesian seas are home to most of the world's coral reefs, seagrasses and mangroves that are able to recover at least 17% of global blue carbon," he concluded. Minister Trenggono further emphasized the importance of synergy in implementing blue economy-based development programs in the Indonesian marine and fisheries sector. "I hope that there will be a joint commitment to the development of a blue economy, and blue carbon in particular, among relevant stakeholders. Synergy between institutions is an important key in the success of these programs,” explained Minister Tregono.
