Bappenas launched the green economy index (GEI) which shows Indonesia's green economy transformation continues to show improvement despite a record on environmental aspects. Domestic green economic transformation continues to show improvement in 10 years. This is based on the Green Economy Index (GEI) which was just launched by the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/Bappenas today, Tuesday (9/8). This index consists of 15 indicators which are classified into three pillars, namely economic, social and environmental indicators. Although increasing, the index shows that Indonesia's green economy transformation is still a record from the environmental aspect. "The result, overall, shows that Indonesia's performance is not too bad, there is progress, although of course there are ups and downs," said Bappenas Environment Director Medrilzam in an online press conference. Indonesia's green economy index in 2020 was 59.17. This value is the highest in the last decade and shows an increase of 25% since 2010. This performance is supported mainly by the economic pillar with an index score of 64.98 points, while the social and environmental pillars are below the overall index. Social index with a score of 59 and environment 52.35 points. "We see that there is homework in the context of the environment, we need to properly maintain our economy for the better and also balance it with other pillars," he said. The economic pillar consists of six indicators. These include emission intensity, final energy intensity, Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, agricultural productivity, labor productivity in the industrial sector and labor in the service sector. The environmental pillar consists of five indicators, starting from the percentage of forest cover area, the mix of new and renewable energy, the percentage of managed waste, the reduction of cumulative emissions and the reduction of peatland cover. Four indicators from the social pillars ranging from life expectancy to, the poverty rate, the average length of schooling and the open unemployment rate. He detailed the four indicators that recorded the highest performance in 2020, namely forest cover, managed waste, labor productivity and life expectancy. The four indicators scored above 75 points. While the lowest is the peatland degradation indicator and poverty which is at the level of 25 points. The rise in Covid-19 cases in 2020 led to a significant decline in poverty and unemployment rates. This caused the social pillar to fall in 2020 while the other two pillars increased in 2020. Medrilzam said that during the last 10 years, the trend of the national green economy index has continued to rise. However, in 2015 it fell significantly due to forest fires. This event is the reason environmental indicators touched their lowest level in 10 years in 2015. Furthermore, the launch of the GEI index is to provide a clear measuring tool to monitor the green economy transformation process in Indonesia. The reason is, measuring the green economy is not enough to look at green GDP data alone, but it is necessary to look more broadly, including from social and environmental aspects.
