Ministry of Fisheries Cooperates with FAO to Develop Smart Fishery Village in South Sumatra

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) cooperates with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to develop a Smart Fisheries Village (SFV) or Smart Fisheries Village in South Sumatra (Sumsel). Head of the Research and Human Resources Agency (BRSDM) KKP I Nyoman Radiarta in a press release in Jakarta, Wednesday, stated that efforts to develop SFV in the location were carried out by BRSDM through the Palembang Public Water Fisheries Research Center and Fisheries Extension (BRPPUPP) under the supervision of the Research Center.

Fisheries (Pusriskan) BRSDM. According to Nyoman, SFV is a concept of developing a fishery village and work unit based on the application of superior seeds, information technology, communication and effective management, sustainability, and improving the economy, which is in the midst of the aquaculture village program and the Innovation Village/Partner Village. "The Smart Fisheries Village concept is to create an integrated fishery business ecosystem in one area from the upstream production business to the downstream marketing business," said Nyoman.
Nyoman has also made a working visit to South Sumatra in early July 2022, in order to review Patra Tani Village, Muara Enim Regency, as the location for the SFV development. He explained that the development of SFV in Patra Tani was to strengthen village independence based on fishery businesses and as a form of acceleration of priority programs echoed by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, namely the development of aquaculture villages based on local wisdom. Nyoman continued, in developing the SFV, BRSDM collaborated with FAO in the I-Fish program, which is a collaborative project between KKP and FAO that focuses on three freshwater fish commodities, namely eel, arowana and belida. The aim of the project, according to him, is to strengthen the management framework for the utilization of the diversity of inland fishery resources in order to increase the protection of high-value and diverse inland fishery ecosystems in Indonesia.
"There are at least four main activity components that are of concern, namely the mainstream of biodiversity through resource development and policy management; conservation and sustainable use of fish species; monitoring and assessment of biodiversity; as well as project monitoring and evaluation, and management adaptation," he said. It is said that the local government (Pemda) appreciates and expresses its support for the efforts to develop SFV in Patra Tani and that the aim is to be able to preserve local and typical fish species from South Sumatra that are protected and have high economic value. Previously, the development of SFV in the last two years at Patra Tani BRSDM has applied the Special Area for Conservation and Fish Refugia (SPEECTRA) innovation which has several functions as fish production reserves, carbon stocks, supporting food security, providing fish animal protein in anti-stunting programs, preventing fires, as well as being an artificial fishery sanctuary for spawning, sheltering and foraging fish. SPEECTRA, in its development, will be projected as an integrated fisheries area based on edutourism. Gradually, SPEECTRA has been built since 2019 with an area of 5 ha as a pilot. In its development process, BRPPUPP synergizes with other BRSDM Technical Implementation Units, namely the Bogor Freshwater Cultivation Fisheries Research Center and Fisheries Extension (BRPBATPP) Bogor, as well as the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (LHK) through the Palembang LHK Instrument Standard Application Center in an effort to provide natural food and contribution of local fish breeders.

As announced, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono is aggressively encouraging the development of fishing villages as one of the KKP's priority programs to strengthen community economic resilience and encourage development in various regions.
