Export Market Expansion, Government Provides Ease of Fishery Licensing

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) expands export access for small-scale fisheries. Efforts to strengthen the certification and traceability system are also encouraged in order to provide convenience for small-scale fisheries. Director of Fish Resource Management at the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries Ridwan Mulyana conveyed that the efforts made by his party are Fish Catch Certification (SHTI), Catch Document Scheme (CDS), Marine Stewardships Council (MSC) and the National Fish Traceability and Logistics System (STELINA). "This is important to ensure that fishing activities, including small-scale fisheries, are carried out responsibly," he said while attending the 2022 United Nations Oceans Conference (UNOC) international conference in Lisbon, Portugal, yesterday. Ridwan emphasized that a quota-based measurable fishing policy exists to ensure that fishing activities do not lead to overfishing conditions. "The quota for local fishermen will be prioritized by the government, then the quota will be calculated for industrial and non-commercial purposes," he added.

In addition, he continued, simplification of fishery business processes was also carried out, including ease of licensing, especially for small and medium scale businesses. Small fishermen now don't need to have a permit just registered to stay monitored. Meanwhile, the Director General of Capture Fisheries, M. Zaini Hanafi, said that it was the duty of the KKP to ensure the availability of access for fishery business actors, especially small-scale fishermen, to utilize marine and fishery resources, in addition to the market aspect. "Because apart from supporting food security, small-scale fisheries are a driving force for the nation's economy," he said.

Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono at the 2022 UNOC event conveyed Indonesia's commitment to support marine health through three priorities. Namely the expansion of conservation areas, scalable fishing and the love of the sea program.
