Indonesian Coffee Shops Are Thriving in Japan, Coffee Exports Are Strengthened Through Exhibitions

Indonesia will strengthen coffee exports to Japan by establishing the 'Indonesia House of Beans' in Japan on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Wisma Duta Tokyo. This is because local coffee shops that specialize in selling Specialty Coffee from Indonesia are mushrooming in a number of areas in Japan. “Indonesian coffee exports to Japan are currently growing. This must be used as a momentum to continue to encourage the marketing of the specialty and uniqueness of our coffee while at the same time continuing to promote Indonesia in Japan," said Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia (Indonesian Ambassador) to Japan Heri Akhmadi in a press release, Monday (27/6/2022). Heri said that Japan is the main destination for Indonesian coffee exports besides the United States and Egypt. However, the value of our coffee exports to Japan is still below that of Indonesian competitors such as Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, Guatemala and Ethiopia.
Meanwhile, this idea was put forward by the Indonesian Ambassador in collaboration with Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Ministry of Trade. The idea was realized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the three, as well as Kopi Kalyan, a coffee shop in Tokyo fronted by young Indonesians who became the location for the 'Indonesia House of Beans' showcase. Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Dody Budi Waluyo confirmed that Bank Indonesia has a strong commitment to continue to assist the Government's efforts to encourage exports of Indonesian products to foreign countries. "The establishment of the House of Beans is a concrete step that we are taking together to procure quality and sustainable Indonesian MSME coffee in Japan which will eventually bring foreign exchange into the country," said Dody who was present at Wisma Duta Tokyo. According to the Director General of Development Didi Sumedi's National Exports, innovative and collaborative steps are needed to continue to increase Indonesia's exports both in terms of value and volume.

"House of Beans can facilitate especially MSME exports. In the future, not only coffee, but also other commodities such as cocoa can be part of this House of Beans so that Indonesian products are increasingly known and popular in Japan," he said. There are at least eight coffee shops in Japan. which specializes in selling Indonesian coffee, such as Kalyan Coffee in Tokyo, Mahameru Coffee in Chiba, Jalak Coffee and Cacao in Kagawa, Iwashita Coffee in Kumamoto, Kadatuan Coffee in Shizuoka, Sunny Side Fields in Kagawa and most recently in May 2022 is Payu Coffee in Tokyo.
