Coal from Indonesia is a bone of contention in Europe

Because Russia will stop coal exports worldwide, Indonesian coal is now a bone of contention for many countries in Europe. Russia will stop coal exports in August 2022. A number of countries in Europe are flocking to seek coal supplies from other countries, one of them is Indonesia. The government also plans to increase national coal production to meet demand from Europe. Special Staff to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Irwandy Arif, revealed that there are already 4 countries that will order Indonesian coal, although the process is still in initial discussion.

"The assessment is still early. Russia just wants to stop (coal exports) in August this year. Still exploring. There is Germany, there is Spain, Italy, the Netherlands," he said. To balance this coal order in Europe, Irwandy asked coal mine owners to increase their production. Even so, there are still other challenges that cannot suddenly increase supply. One of them is the weather factor. He revealed that weather conditions greatly affect the company's coal production. Production has not increased and is still far from this year's target. "We have only produced 41 percent of the target, the data is up to May 2022," said Irwandy.
In addition to the problem of stalled production, he also said that another challenge in fulfilling orders for coal from Europe is the issue of coal spec or quality, which domestic companies may not be able to meet. "Remember that Europe demands (calories) above 5,000. We don't know yet (it can be fulfilled), what if the existing contract is full, unless he wants to increase production, we need to know how much, we don't know exactly how much, "he said.
