Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono and the ranks of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) will celebrate World Ocean Day 2022 in Wakatobi Regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Special Assistant to the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Doni Ismanto said, in the commemoration, the Ministry which oversees everything related to the marine and fisheries sector will present a number of activities. "The Minister will be on Wangi-Wangi Island which is the capital of Wakatobi Regency from 7 to 9 June to celebrate World Ocean Day which falls on 8 June 2022," Doni said in Jakarta, Monday (6/6/2022). Minister Trenggono himself has ordered all directorates in the KKP to participate in the commemoration of the international momentum.

Meanwhile, the Director General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products (PDSPKP) Artati Widiarti who is also responsible as the chief executive, said that the World Ocean Day was filled with activities ranging from beach clean-up and soft launching of aquaculture villages. "In celebration of World Oceans Day, government assistance from various KKP work units will also be handed over, the value of which reaches Rp 36 billion which will be handed over to the Wakatobi community through the local government," said Artati. Government assistance to be handed over includes dozens of cool box units, chest freezers, hundreds of fishing gear units, thousands of nemo and white snapper seeds, seaweed nursery, and fiber boats for fishermen. Artati added that the beach clean-up activity started a series of events for the 2022 World Ocean Day in Wakatobi.

The target of this activity is to become a means of education for the community to be more concerned about the cleanliness of the beach and the sea by not littering, and are willing to carry out clean-up movements independently. Regarding the implementation of the blue economy, Artati added that KKP is currently developing seaweed cultivation because apart from being a leading export product, seaweed also plays an important role in climate change issues. "By increasing seaweed cultivation, it can help absorb carbon dioxide and slow climate change," concluded Artati.
