Demand for Mangrove Crab Increases, Ministry of Fisheries Holds Cultivation and Hatchery Technical Guidance

Market demand for mangrove crab commodities continues to increase, so that its production must be managed properly. The statement was delivered by the Director General of Aquaculture, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Tb Haeru Rahayu, through a written statement from the KKP, Sunday (5/6/2022). According to him, market demand for mud crab commodities continues to increase. As a consequence of the increase in demand, the production of mud crab, both through fishing and aquaculture, must be managed properly. He explained that mangrove crabs are one of the fisheries resources that can be found along the coast of Indonesia, especially in mangrove areas or brackish waters.

The market potential and demand for mud crabs is also quite broad and not limited for both local consumption and export. "Management of mud crab resources is the main thing that must be done in maintaining the sustainability of the use of these resources so that they can still make an economic contribution to the community," he said. In this regard, KKP through the Directorate General of Aquaculture (DJPB) has implemented Technical Guidance (Bimtek) for Cultivation and Hatchery of Mangrove Crab (Scylla serrata). Head of the Jepara Brackish Water Cultivation Fisheries Center (BBPBAP), Supito said the technical guidance was to increase the productivity of mangrove crabs and minimize natural catches.

The activity was carried out at BBPBAP Jepara on 23-30 May 2022, with crab MSME participants in West Manggarai. "The activity of the training and hatchery of mangrove crabs can be a medium for learning and sharing information about mud crab cultivation so that it can be applied in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara," said Supito. He hopes that this activity can improve skills and mastery of mud crab cultivation and hatchery technology for MSME actors. Not only that, business guidance and management of mangrove crab aquaculture are also carried out for MSME actors. "The role of mangrove crab culture and hatchery technology is expected to be able to produce superior crab seeds, and its cultivation is able to reduce dependence on caught crabs," said Supito.
