Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP): Indonesia is The World's First Tuna Producer with 15% Production Share

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) stated that Indonesia was the first producer of tuna, skipjack and tuna in the world with a production share of 15%. Marketing Director of the Directorate General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Marine and Fishery Products at KKP Erwin Dwiyana said in Jakarta, Tuesday, the increase in Indonesian tuna production was even higher than the world average. "Indonesian production experienced an average increase of 3.66%, higher than the world average increase of 3.42%," said Erwin. Indonesia is the largest tuna producer in the world, followed by the Philippines with a production share of 7.3%, Vietnam 6.6%, and Ecuador 6.1%. The largest tuna production in Indonesia is skipjack tuna and yellowfin tuna. However, Erwin said that although Indonesia is the largest tuna producer in the world, it has not been able to become the world's largest tuna exporter. Based on ITC Trademap data, Indonesia is only the world's number six tuna exporter with a market share of 5.33% in 2020.

The world's largest tuna exporter is led by Thailand with a market share of 17.73%, followed by China 8.45%, Spain 8.20%, Ecuador 7.98%, and Taiwan 5.57%. From January to December 2021, Indonesia exported the most tuna, skipjack, tuna to the European Union by 28.8% of total exports, ASEAN 24.7%, Japan 17.9%, the United States 8.7%, and other countries 21 ,6%. According to Erwin, the reason why Indonesia's tuna market share is still low is because Indonesia's level of competitiveness is not yet competitive. Aspects related to the competitiveness of Indonesian tuna are product, price and service.
